Student Spotlight

This month I’d like to feature a guy many of you know, the Mr. Jose Arvizu! He has been back and forth between private lessons and the group class setting for over a year now! A man who loves music and makes friends easily! He even helps head up our social outings group we have formulated from our familiar faces and new and lasting friendship we have developed at TMA as a community!

Here is his Journey –

“I had always loved to dance. I was always the first one on the dance floor. Then for a time the dancing stopped. I faced many challenges, obstacles, and personal struggles. I knew that I wanted to learn how to be a better dancer. I knew dancing would boost my self-confidence, and yes, help me meet ladies. When I was hurting, dance made me feel better. When I faced struggles, dance inspired me to keep going.

I had purchased three groupons, and one of those groupons led me to Tucson Movement Arts, and Amanda. I immediately knew Amanda was special. Her smile, passion for dance, and energy were contagious. I enjoy her jokes, sometimes corny, but most importantly… Amanda has helped me find the song in my heart, and the rhythm in my feet.

Tucson Movements Arts, and Amanda have given me one of the greatest gifts… Dance. I have become very proficient in Country Swing and Two Step, feel very comfortable leading, and feel confident asking any lady to dance. My salsa is improving so that I now only require “two mojitos,” before hitting the dance floor. 😉

What I love about Tucson Movements Arts dance studio, are the people who I share it with, and the wonderful people I have met. Going out dancing has inspired me to become a better dancer.

Now, I go out and I’ve been told I’m actually pretty good at it, and if I can get other people dancing it makes me happy. Dancing keeps me young, and life is better when I dance.

Life may not be the party we hoped for but while we are here, we should dance. On a DVD video I made for my daughter Paige, I chose the following from Lee Ann Womack
“And when you get a chance to sit it or dance, I hope you dance”

Thank you Amanda, Tucson Movement Arts, for inspiring me, making dance fun, and helping me to learn.
With love and gratitude”.

Student Spotlight
I asked the lovely Amanda Krause to speak about her dance interests and life with us here at TMA! She has been one of our original group class members since we first opened. She has watched us grow and developed many new friendships as the months and years go on. Here is what she had to say!

“I feel like I am a latecomer to the dance community. Even though I have always loved theater (especially musicals—why wouldn’t you want a chorus of people to break out into song and dance in your everyday life?), dancing wasn’t something that I pursued in any sort of a formal way growing up. I was never especially athletic or musically inclined, and the dance audition in high-school musical days was always the toughest part for me (relegating me to the chorus, where I could safely be hidden in back). And so while I avidly consumed films like Center Stage and Save the Last Dance and spent many a Monday night in college with Dancing with the Stars on in the background while my roommate and I studied, my metaphorical blue suede shoes stayed on the shelf. As an adult, the thing I find most difficult (especially after having moved out halfway across the country on my own at age twenty-three) is making new friends. The second most difficult thing is finding some kind of exercise that I don’t absolutely hate and can stick with (I am a serial canceler of gym memberships).

One evening in April 2017, I noticed Tucson Movement Arts as I left a yoga class at the studio next door and headed to my car. (Yoga was another of those fitness activities I could never quite stick with.) Neat, I said to myself, thinking that dance lessons would be a thing I’d like to do “one day.” But on a whim I looked closer and saw the studio offered weekday evening group classes and that no partner was necessary, so I decided to give it a try.
It took about half a lesson before I was hooked, and though I took some time away, I am so happy to be dancing again! (I’ve even convinced my husband that a full semester of tap lessons would be a great standing Saturday afternoon date.) I find that the social nature of dance makes it a wonderful way to meet new friends outside of work—and my favorite kind of exercise is the kind you can do in cute shoes and a twirly skirt!”
-Amanda Krause
